dogscats1It is interesting how art materials work in different conditions. I did these painted drawing boards over the last two weeks in as I am sure many of you know extremely hot conditions. Here is a little trick to keep your pallet from turning into the Sahara Desert . I put some wet paper towels down on a shallow pan and put a piece of wax paper over the top. The wax paper absorbs the water but at a much slower rate keeping your paint from drying out. Look for my follow up post this winter when I give you tips on how to paint in sub-zero temperatures.

New sculpture

This sculpture is part of a series called “tech vs flesh” The box started life as a dolls steamer trunk. I thought that looks seaworthy. I always loved the scene in Joe vs. the volcano where Tom Hanks ties the trunks together to make a boat. The lady asked me what I was going to do with it. I told her she wouldn’t believe me if I told her. I wonder if she would have sold it to me if she knew. Somewhere there is a doll crying because there is nothing to put her clothes in. It is made from just about everything you can imagine. Wood, clay ,paint, metal ,foam ,paper ,cloth. dimensions 21″,19″,10″

Yes I find this stuff as weird as you do but I am learning to accept it.

drawingday_todayJune 5th is national drawing day. Go over their web site and be part of the fun. All you have to do is make a drawing and post it on your favorite social network site. Don’t worry you don’t have to be an artist to participate. Its just for fun! And yes artists are weirdos. We actually enjoy stuff like this. Thanks for asking!

circus1This is my piece for the space 242 gallery show circus themed show. It measures 22t x 14w x 6d. It took a better part of the last month to complete. I wish I had the know how and technology for this to take quarters and give fortunes. My idea was to create a sideshow arcade machine that was so creepy that your friends would dare you to try it. Thank you mr glue gun for all the help I couldn’t have done it without you. Also you can have the kitchen table back hun and we can start eating dinner at the table and not on t.v. trays. I am glad that my family is willing to suffer with me for the art. Thanks guys!

These are pictures of two custom buoys done to benefit The Cape Ann Art Haven of Gloucester . I know it is another star wars custom thing. I feel like a broken record sometimes but I think that it came out great. The birdcage buoy is a design that my wife Tammy thought up. She did all the paper cutting and layering and I did the wire and copper work. It is a true jam piece and we had a lot of fun doing it. Swing by the event meet some people and buy some art! It’s this Friday night starting at 6pm at the Cruiseport in Gloucester. Click the website for more info.

blockhead1blockhead2

Well I’m not a blockhead but rather it is the title of my new piece .This is a kit bash sculpture I did from an old school mpc vader tie model kit and some other plastic stuff I had. Kit bash are fancy words for using parts from lots of model kits and throwing out the instruction sheet. It combines two of my childhood loves Star Wars and Charlie Brown. He is such a blockhead that it just had to be the name for it.

Tom Torrey a.k.a. Gammaraybots has a piece in the All the Right Gallery and store in Queens New York. It is being presented by Tenacious Toys and sculptor Mike Mendez. The idea behind this show was to customize not a toy but an empty roll-on container.

The containers are cheap and can be found anywhere. Toms entry “The Slob” is wrapped in sculpy modeling compound sculpted and painted in acrylics. The only other materials are underarm hair and his bath towel.

The show opens :
Friday, October 30th, 7PM (Devils’ Night!)
All the Right graff supply store
3561 Junction Blvd
