Surf Movie Night is back… for those of you that have been with us since the old days, you know we used to show surf movies in our old art studio in Rockport. These nights were amazing community gatherings where we all got to enjoy a couple beers in each others company and take in great films on the 10ft movie screen. Once we moved our studio/gallery (the Hive) to Main St. in Gloucester we lost the space for hosting these nights.…
Now that we have the gym space and the movie screen, we can fire up the projector. So next Friday December 10th we will be having the first CFCA/HIVE surf movie night. Here’s the deal… we open the doors at 8pm. It’s kind of potluck style (snacks) and bring what you want to drink. We have the fridge so no need to bring ice. Usually we have social hour and then end up playing the movie around 9:30pm. I think will end up showing 180 Degrees South. Come join us and bring friends… it’s a great time and a great way to get to know each other in another setting.

“I generate my art for the purpose that most artists do, to create dialogue, awareness, emotion and or a memory. In my skate and surf art, I want the viewer to feel the motion of the water, the moving board, smell the water and concrete, and to feel the grit of the wheels touching the asphalt. I hope to create enough iconographical clues throughout my painting that the viewer looks closer and ask questions as to what it all means. Hive Artist Greg Orfanos finished the murals on the utility boxes in Salem. A total of about 76 hours worth of work. Pretty Amazing.
The Gloucester Triathlon is looking for volunteer kayakers and surfers to serve as water observers and rest stops for swimmers competing in this year’s Triathlon. I did it last year and it was really fun. If you’re interested or know someone who might be, have them drop a note to Janda Ricci-Munn (jrm@jandariccimunn.com) to sign up. John Monte is a local guy making wood surfboards out of a little shop nook in his cottage off of East Main. We stopped in to see what we has so far and what else is in the works. All photos by Jonathan Kozowyk
How did you start making wood boards?
I started making wood boards in the basement of a building I was living in on Cape Cod. I love history and am facinated with the traditions of surfing. As I learned about the earliest days of surfing I realized I needed to ride a 10″ 80lb wooden board. Boardslike this are hard to find and very expensive, so the next option was to build my own. Using native materials and limited knowledge I carved out a wave riding vehicle in the tradition of the forefathers. It feels good to connect with that creativity through neccesity that boardbuilders felt a century ago.
What boards have you made so far? What are your methods? What are your materials?
I have made a classic style single fin longboard, two 5′10″ swallow tail fishes, and an alaia solid wood board. I use a system I came up with on my own. I begin by making a scale model of the board to see what I want it to look like. I then design and make the rocker and outline templates. In the rocker template, I will design the chamber system which will make the board hollow and flexible. After pre-cutting the rocker and chambers into each strip of the board the pieces are laminated together. I now have a solid block of wood that is hollow. This allows me to sculpt the board as I please with no restrictions. The wood sculpting is a part of the process I really enjoy. Once the board is shaped I make the fins. These boards are now covered with fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin, then polished to a lustrous finish. I am using native New England woods, eastern white pine, poplar, basswood, and white cedar. I have goals of finding my own sustainable wood source in the future.
What boards are next? What other board builders are you inspired by?
The next board I’m thinking about is a thumbnail single fin, around 7 feet. A little extra length for paddling, a little extra rocker for steep faces. I also have visions of a really thick and really wide longboard, made for choppy, mushy waves. I was recently talking with a friend about an 18 foot open ocean paddle board. This is something I have been conceptualizing lately and getting a bit excited about. I have been inspired by a board builder in Australia, Tom Wegener. He runs a sustainable operation building beautiful paulonia wood boards. I look up to the generations passed that made the first surfboards. I also have to give credit to mother nature, the greatest artist of all, she inspires me every day.

Art Haven is having its annual Buoy Auction fundraiser this Friday January 29th from 6-9pm at the Cruiseport Gloucester (6 Rowe Sq.) Hand-painted buoys from the Lobster Trap Christmas Tree will be auctioned off to raise funds for Art Haven’s programing. *Plus ten Hive artists have donated 10 buoys to the silent auction. (see Will Mean’s Buoy above) If you find yourself in Gloucester Friday, come down to enjoy tons of food from local restaurants and support a great cause.

Karen and I just got back from Mexico where we shared a house with one of the creators of Dear and Yonder, Andria Lessner. After much anticipation our copy of the DVD arrived the other day and the movie is one of the best efforts I have seen in a long time. Really inspiring short bios on women who are representing surfing in a positive way. Hoping to find a venue for surf movie night so we can show this.

Hivers Meghan and Mike at Persistent Productions wrote from their winter hideout in Monteray, CA to announce they are wrapping their hour-long documentary Shooting for Democracy. The film examines the 2008 national elections in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan and the 2008 US presidential elections from the perspective of high school students in each country. The film combines professionally produced footage with excerpts from students’ work. Students in three classrooms participated in a video exchange program, and the film follows their personal experiences while also exploring the social and political contexts of these distinct nations.

We decided we can have the best effect to create connections and enhance the creative image/culture/community of cape ann by focusing on our events. So come out!

What’s is your background creatively?
I have been a creative person all my life. I enjoyed the grade school art classes but let go of art when I got into high school. When i was picking college classes I noticed that the line at the Art table was very short compared to the undeclared table which was 5 miles long. I don’t know if it was Serendipity or laziness but I went to the art table and picked out a few classes and the rest is history.
What other creative areas do you hope to explore in the future?
I would love to have the room to explore larger scale sculpture. I miss the college studios because they always had lot of room and places to store materials and completed work. Due to space problems I have taught myself to work smaller. I guess the benefit is I can complete more work in a shorter time. I always marveled at artists that spent 6 months on one work.
How did you become involved with the Hive?
Jon Conant saw my work at the Boston Bazaar Bizarre back in 2007 and later bought one of my found object robots. I think it was march of this year he emailed me and let me know that he was getting together a group of like minded artists from Cape Ann. I can remember being very nervous at the first get to know you meeting a few months ago. I found the people to be very friendly and I had no trouble fitting in. It is nice to have a place to gab with other artists.
What are your thoughts on the Hive? How can it become better? more unique?
I love the idea of The Hive. For the lack of a better metaphor it is like cheers for the art set. Having a group of people who support each other and understand what you are and what you do is great. I would love to see more Artist community involvement. I can tell you from experience that it is very hard to take your work from your studio and hang it on a wall for people to see. It can be really scary. However You can’t wait for someone to appear at your door and ask you to show your work. That would be nice but it isn’t realistic.
I had this idea. Remember when we were kids and the local supermarket had a coloring contest. You took one of the shopping bags and colored on it and brought it to the store and they hung it up. There were hundreds of those things taped to the wall. Perhaps there is a way to bring that idea into the 21st century. What if hive and local artists were given a piece of wood or bottle or other common object to decorate alter or transform in some way. Anyone who gets the object is given a place in the show. It might bring people out of their shell. It would be a community show and we could also bring in some other artists into the hive. I think if the community is given the chance to participate they would feel that the hive is theirs too.
Another idea I had is incorporating the beach clean ups that I know many of you do into an art event. What if we invited the town to a beach clean up and art competition. We could take the stuff we collect on the beach and have a sculpture contest with it. There could be prizes ( I would donate some artwork) and donations accepted for a local charity. It would incorporate clean up making art and charitable donations all thanks to the folks from The Hive. I have no idea how to even set something like this up or if it is possible. Just throwing it out there.
What are your thoughts on Cape Ann? How can it become better? more unique?
I am originally from the south shore Mass and I have to tell you that the North shore has it all over them. I feel more at home here by the seashore that I ever did there. The people are friendly and I can feel the history here. I think that what is lacking is the closeness and simple niceties of life. We are racing around faster and faster. I wish we would all slow down take a breath and learn what is important to us.
What are your interests outside of Art?
I am a dad and take care of a couple of feisty yet great kids. It is a challenge to juggle an artist carrier and be a husband and a father. I give free art lessons to my kids and hope they bring this creative spark with them. I love movies and music. Pop culture has been a big influence to me all my life.
Anything you want to add?
I’m boring myself talking about me. I’m going to make some art!

Without sounding like complete groupies, we at Art Throb would just like to say: The Hive is so cool…and we want to be your friends in art and community! Your opening statement on your blog makes us tingle: The Hive is equal parts working studio, gallery event space & clubhouse for the younger generation of Cape Ann creative folk. We formed early in 2009 to encourage art & idea collaborations, support systems and the creation of links between individuals and their community as a whole.
You are our Cape Ann blog crush! We love it when you use phrases like cross-pollination — clever coming from The Hive. The fact that most of you are Cape Ann surfers nearly puts us over the edge…YOU ARE ART THROBS! We plan to be at your gallery opening on July 10 when you feature the Robotic Creations of Tom Torrey and other inspiring North Shore artists at your studio across from the Rockport train station.
We first heard about you from the adorable and talented musician Jesse Ciarmataro – one of your affiliated artists — when we bumped into him on Salem’s Derby Wharf walking dogs.
We’ve heard through the grapevine that you might like us too…We thought of writing you a love letter, but then we thought, how about tracking down Jon the Surfer of Everlution Design, the creative force behind The Hive, and doing a Q and A. Without further ado…
Q: (Dinah Cardin): Are you the founder?
A: (Jon Conant): Yes, I consider myself the founder and working creative director, although I have a core crew of people in the community that I rely on for making decisions concerning the gallery, marketing etc.
Q: How did you come up with the cool name — the Hive?
A: The Hive is a name I’ve been thinking about for some time now. I like it cause it represents an active working community with lots of energy. I’ve been in this studio for 4 years now and had other artists sublet space the whole time. After going through a few name changes I finally settled on The Hive as an umbrella name for the whole building.
Q: How did the collaborative come together?
A: Originally my vision for the Hive was to get a big building filled with private studios, communal workspace for classes, a gallery space, maybe some sort of food/coffee option all under one roof. Kind of like the Steelyard in Providence. I wanted/ still want to create that space that could be a hub for the younger creative community on Cape Ann but we are starting small in our current location and will see where it goes.
Q: What are you trying to do with this collaborative?
A: Our Mission is “The Hive seeks to build community by providing a space for arts exploration, cross-pollination of ideas and promoting creative and active lifestyles on Cape Ann”. That, pretty much sums it up I guess. Create community, motivate people to be creative in all aspects of life, give a venue for non-traditional work, make Cape Ann a better more unique environment. I really want to facilitate connections between people. There is a great community of younger creative and active people here. But being New Englanders, I feel that a lot of us are kind of slow to connect with others. This is really unfortunate.
Q: What’s the scene like in Gloucester/Cape Ann these days? Is it getting as hip as it seems?
A: It’s coming around although not as quick as some would hope. I think everyone agrees that Gloucester in particular has a ton of untapped potential. I think it’s up to the younger generation to get it to the tipping point. I mean Cape Ann in general is so beautiful! I think of it as really good base camp in that everyday you can go out and have an adventure be it surfing, climbing, trail running, snorkeling, kayaking to the islands etc. There is so much space and terrain to explore. We are really blessed to have that. As far as the businesses that are here, I guess I just wish they took the extra step to make themselves a bit more unique and fun! Don’t be afraid of color.
As far as the art scene goes…In my opinion it’s way too focused on traditional work, too old, too competitive, and way too self-serious. I think Cape Ann is a victim of its history in a way. The whole area is typecast from one too many paintings of Motif #1. I think the whole arts community needs to forget about the history for a while and try something new. We really have nothing to lose and everything to gain at this point. I’m sure this will piss off a lot of people but that’s pretty much how I see it. I mean just calling myself an artist up here makes me uncomfortable because of certain hoakie connotations. I just like to think of myself as someone who likes to make stuff and be creative.
Q: How many of you are also surfers? Explain why art and surfing go hand in hand?
A: A lot of us are surfers. Not really sure why art and surfing go hand in hand. I think it’s personal for everyone. Surfing is one of the most important and enjoyable aspects of my life. I schedule everything around it when it’s good.
Q: How do you think North Shore communities can work together to improve the art scene?
A: Obviously be supportive of each other and make connections and collaborate. I guess I would also say be honest of what the current creative scene is and try to find ways to motivate yourself and other people to make it better.
Q: Future of the Hive?
A: We are opening our Gallery on July 10th. Tom Torrey of www.gammaraybots.com is going to be the first featured artist. (lots of other work too) After that we’ll take it day by day, try to get more artists involved, grow the community and hopefully one day reach the original vision.
Q: How did you find Art Throb?
A: Kyle Browne, an artist who is involved with The Hive told us about you guys.

Along with being the founder and working creative director of the Hive, Jon also spends his time in the studio making objects from reclaimed wood under the label Everlution Forms and firing glass into retro cabinet hardware under the label Retroglassworks. Other than that he likes spending time surfing, climbing and exploring Cape Ann with his wife Karen and their 2 dogs Moxy & Kiwi.

I was going through our flickr site and got nostalgic about the old van. It’s been not quite a year with the new truck. The van ended up having some major mechanical problems. We made the tough call of trading her in. During our negotiations at ira toyota the salesman retorts to Karen’s inquiry on the low trade in value of the van by saying “well…it’s handpainted and it smells like fish”. We almost cried we were laughing so hard. He forgot wet dog, wet astroturf, wet wetsuits and the list goes on.

You’ll clean up the coast to protect wildlife and the environment and have fun making a huge ephemeral artwork.

A seaworthy vessel of a different kind. Our friend David built this viking ship in his Charleston, SC studio for his son. Here is an action shot of David rigging her for the photo. David is a super talented furniture maker utilizing bent plywood and structural building materials in creative ways.
I used to play around with surfboard shaping & glassing in college as functional sculpture. I maybe shaped and glassed a dozen boards before I got rid of all the tools and chemicals…. under the assumption that I was already breathing enough wood dust in the studio. I’m still interested in shaping so when I get the chance to watch real shapers work, I take it. Gary Wilson at Kinetic was nice enough to let me sit in and ask questions while I watched him shape this 6′4″quad fish. Thanks Gary!

Jonny was featured climbing The Shafat Fortress in the movie “The Sharp End ” that we played at the last Surf movie night. He was a huge inspiration to the climbing community for his good nature and unbelievable abilities in the mountains. My heart goes out to his family and friends, the sender films crew and the climbing community as a whole for this huge loss.

I was down in Brooklyn this weekend so I checked out the 5th annual Renegade Craft Fair. 250 vendors from all over the country set up shop in Williamsburg’s McCarren Park with all types of handmade crafty stuff: jewelry, prints and stationary, decorative items, stuffed animals, and lots and lots and lots of t-shirts. There were some definite stand-outs for me. I love foldedpigs’ morbid, cock-roach emblazoned, repurposed restaurant ware. Final Approach also puts art in an unexpected place with some really cool custom suitcases. But the hands-down best in show for me was Cherry Box Studios’ Plushkill Forest plushy wall-mounted animal heads. I’m having reverse buyer’s remorse for not bringing one home with me.
I also got to spend some time in Manhattan photographing some of my favorite iconic architecture. Here are a couple of my better shots: Cesar Pelli’s Bloomberg Tower; Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum (with pigeon); my current favorite architect, Norman Foster’s Hearst Tower; and Mies van der Rohe’s minimalist masterpiece, the Seagram Building.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand, the French photographer probably best known for Earth from Above has made a new movie - HOME – about the planet Earth and the ecological (and therefore civilization-al) crisis we face. On June 5th the movie will premiere for free at events around the world and online. The trailer gives a sense of the impact that the images in this movie promise to make.

I used to climb with Steve when I was going to Colorado College. He’s a great guy doing really cool public art projects with kids. I’d love to get him to Gloucester in the future. After a cold winter, I’m back in the studio on a regular basis and starting some new stuff.
Utilizing 19th century tintype photographic techniques, emerging artist Joni Sternbach captures portraits and seascapes along America’s coastal regions. For her premiere solo museum exhibition, Sternbach presents a recent body of work focused on tintype portraits of surfers. These images mine the tradition of anthropological photography to explore the enduring culture of surfing within Sternbach’s own country. SurfLand: Photographs by Joni Sternbach is the debut exhibition for the Peabody Essex Museum’s newly appointed Curator of Photography, Phillip Prodger.
